Dangerous Tree Signs: When to Arrange an Inspection

Warning Signs That Need Attention

A tree does not need to look dramatic to deserve an inspection. Recent changes are often more useful than a single feature that has always been present.

Arrange prompt tree-care advice if you notice:

• A new or increasing lean
• Fresh cracks or splits in the trunk or major branches
• Lifted soil or movement around the root area
• Large dead, broken or hanging branches
• A branch resting on a roof, fence or electrical infrastructure
• Sudden canopy dieback
• Storm damage that has changed the tree's balance

Keep people away and call for emergency help if the danger appears immediate.

Not Every Concern Means Removal

Selective pruning may be enough when the problem is one dead branch, excess weight or practical clearance. A tree may need removal when the whole structure is dead, badly damaged, unstable or unsuitable for the available space.

The purpose of an inspection is to understand the actual problem before choosing the work.

What You Can Check Safely

Look from the ground and from more than one side. Compare the tree with older photographs if you have them.

Do not:

• Climb the tree
• Pull on split or hanging branches
• Cut a branch under tension
• Touch anything near power lines
• Stand beneath a damaged canopy

Trees Near Electrical Infrastructure

Work near live electrical infrastructure needs appropriate authorisation and planning. Affordable Tree Services has authorised team members and will assess the clearance and required controls before recommending work.

If a line is fallen or damaged, stay at least 8 metres away and report the electrical emergency to Ausgrid on 13 13 88. Call Triple Zero (000) for a life-threatening situation.

Council and Written Reports

Tree work and arborist reports are separate services.

For practical pruning or removal, start with a tree-work assessment and written quote. If Northern Beaches Council has specifically requested a report, send the complete request so we can confirm whether our basic Council-ready arborist report service is suitable.

Check Council's current private-land tree guidance before regulated work begins.

• The property address
• What changed and when you first noticed it
• Photographs of the whole tree, trunk and base
• Images showing anything close to the tree
• Access details
• Any Council request or approved plan

Choosing the Next Step
